Photos: Couple create calming retreat in modern loft

Attracted by the proximity to shopping and dining, the floorplan and the abundance of light in the space, the couple purchased their three-level home in 2018.

Shell and Rand Royster bought their Atlanta home in 2018. Before moving in, they renovated the space, completely remodeling the kitchen, renovating the master bath and adding a balcony. A large shower with a tub inside dominates the master bathroom of Shell and Rand Royster’s home. They wanted the space to feel spa-like, so when they remodeled the room in 2018 they embraced the high ceilings and window and added soothing colors. “It was just me kind of designing it and thinking about what was going to fill that space best and serve that space,” said Shell. The master bedroom of Rand and Shell Royster’s Atlanta home is soft and serene, with walls in Sherwin-Williams Passive and hints of pink in the cabinet and West Elm bedding. At the foot of their bed from Macy’s sits a bench that used to be part of their old dining room table set. When they switched out their dining room furniture, Shell made the table into a photography surface, gave one of the benches away and kept the other bench as a drop space at the foot of the bed. About two months after they moved into their new home in 2018, Shell and Rand Royster completed the balcony addition. One of the requirements they had when they moved to this space was the ability to add a balcony, so they worked with A&R Ironworks to create the framework of their outdoor area.
