With Atlanta's growing rental market renters often have few, if any options regarding non-standard paint colors to use on the walls. So what should an urban dweller do to make those white walls come alive?

Atlanta-based Ace Design Expert Katie Reynolds says white walls can showcase a clean and chic look that feels of simple sophistication.

"The fresh, clean look of a white wall is the perfect backdrop for both traditional and more modern interiors," Reynolds said. "White is the ultimate neutral. It is versatile, clean, and will make a room feel open and spacious."

To make the most of white walls, let in as much natural light as possible into the room. This is Reynolds' most emphatic piece of advice for making the most of white walls.

Of course, consider the direction the room faces too. Does the room get morning, noon or midday sun? That will determine the tone of the natural light in the room. For example, a window that faces south will flood a room with a reddish-yellow tint at noon.

Four white walls can also accommodate a bigger and bolder design within the room.

"Go for artwork that is over-scaled and impactful," Reynolds advised.

That can mean anything from large neutral photography to a boldly colored modern canvas. Either way, larger artwork will help break up the white space.

Think about the furniture as well. When working with white walls, Reynolds likes to embrace the color and go with white slipcovered furniture.

For flooring, sisal or jute natural-textured rugs work great. She recommends cool wood tones such as washed grays and bleached or limed woods.

"My secret for room-size sisal or wool rugs is bound carpet, (which is) much cheaper than premade area rugs for the size," Reynolds says.

She also loves to repurpose older furniture in rooms with white walls. This is another must-do for rooms with white walls since it "gives a casual, coastal vibe that makes the white walls feel airy and warm, rather than cold."

Lastly, you can try to bring in the outdoors with potted plants and trees.

"Here in Atlanta, anything made from boxwoods is the key to warming up a white space," Reynolds said.

Good Atlanta stores for outdoor greenery include Boxwoods Gardens and Gifts or Pike Nurseries.
