WHAT THE HOMEOWNER WANTED: With two young children, Keith and Lauren Hyams wanted to transform their tree-ridden backyard to an open space ready for family fun. The Hyams hired contractor Neal Currin of Total Lawn Incorporated for the dramatic project. John Barry of Barry Design Group created the plan.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE: The Hyams received a permit to clear their woodsy backyard of trees to make room for a pool, yard and outdoor kitchen. PROJECT COMPLETION TIME: Nearly a month.

SCOPE OF PROJECT: With the addition of a lawn and playset, the Hyams' 2- and 4-year old children have a proper place to play. The couple's front and side yards also were landscaped to create a cohesive look. PRICE TAG: Keith Hyams originally budgeted $20,000 for the project, but ultimately spent $90,000.

BIGGEST SPLURGE: The outdoor kitchen and television. The Hyams originally wanted a stone fireplace, but later decided to splurge on this SunBrite 46" all-weather outdoor television and kitchen.
