Architect Cara Cummins of TAC Studios in Atlanta describes a bathroom renovation of a master suite in Bethesda, Md.

ABOUT THE PROJECT: Architect Cara Cummins of TAC Studios in Atlanta said this bathroom renovation was part of a master suite overhaul for her brother-in-law's Bethesda, Md., home. The homeowners were inspired by their travels to Thailand, and wanted a boutique hotel feel to the room. DESIGN PHILOSOPHY: Cummins explained that TAC Studios aims to consider a client's daily rituals when designing their space. "We really want it to be appropriate and warm."

PRICE TAG: $70,000. The renovation included gutting this laundry room, adding a separate space for the toilet, converting the former bathroom to a walk-in closet and relocating the laundry room downstairs. TAC also installed heated tile floor by StonePeak Ceramics.

COMPLETION TIME: The project took about two and half months from start to finish, Cummins said, and was finished just before Thanksgiving 2007. After gutting the laundry room, TAC removed the existing door in favor of French doors that open to the outside garden.

DESIGN STYLE: Contemporary. Views of the tranquil garden outside drove the design. Adding to the contemporary feel is a Duravit bathtub by renowned designer Philippe Starck. The bath filler was designed by Arne Jacobson for Vola. BIGGEST CHALLENGE: Cummins said the biggest obstacle was helping the plumber become comfortable installing the European fixtures.

MOST EXPENSIVE ITEM: The stacked stone tiles by Ann Sacks were the biggest splurge in the renovation. Cummins said these tiles set the homeowner back about $30 per square foot, nearly three times the average cost of tile, she said.
