Wendy Beville and Senetha Houck, partners in the Marietta based design and renovation planning company, Defining Spaces Inc., conceptualized this kitchen renovation. See photos of this redo, where they married the traditional and the modern.

Beville and Houck create redesign packages based on client wishes, then the client bids the project out to contractors, in this case Marlon Restrepo. "It's like design in a bag," said Beville. "We project manage if necessary." The kitchen was gutted down to nothing and completely remodeled, she said. PRICE TAG: $130,000 for kitchen re-do and some additional work in the family room and dining area.

Beville and Houck like to mix textures and materials as they did with the matte and shiny effect of the travertine-and-glass tile backsplash. The mixing of materials was also evident in the granite countertops accented with a round glass top. Other details included keeping distracting features, such as outlets, out of view and having multiple light sources including recessed lights, pendant lamps and accent lights under counters and in cabinets.

BIGGEST OBSTACLE: The project timeline was tough since the redesign was done during the holidays, Beville said. Here the old breakfast area is cramped and has limited light. TIME TO COMPLETE PROJECT: Three months.

A more open breakfast space is now accented with a cabinet encased Sub-Zero refrigerator and a full wall of Wood-Mode cabinets. REDESIGN SOURCES: Handblown pendant lamps from Eclectic Electric in Roswell, glass and travertine tiles from Traditions in Tile and Stone. Reporting by Nedra Rhone / AJC.
