Chicks in the City: A plucky home tour

Chicks in the City celebrates chicken coops in Atlanta and Decatur. It's a home tour of sorts, looking at nine hen houses in neighborhoods from Druid Hills east to Oakhurst. It's sponsored by Georgia Organics and the Oakhurst Community Garden, which offers occasional classes on poultry-keeping.

With cedar-shake siding and a cupola, this Kirkwood structure owned by Horeczy and Daily might be mistaken for an upscale house. (And it is, but for chickens.) Atlanta and Decatur allow residents to keep chickens, with some restrictions.

Chicks in the City offers a new twist on the standard home tour: This is a tour of Atlanta and Decatur chicken coops.

'Tiny' the rooster in the kitchen garden of Dale Horeczy and Brad Daily guards his hens in the daytime pen.

This Decatur coop offers its residents shelter from the sun and a chance to amble around the vegetable garden.

A sign on Horeczy and Daily's coop makes it clear where the chickens live.

The Watts Hull coop, like the others, includes nesting boxes, where the hens lay their eggs. "We pay attention to where our food comes from," says Rebecca Watts Hull.
