Chamblee resident creates his own man cave

Brian McGreevy, a Chamblee DJ, turns his basement into a man cave to hold his extensive album and CD collection.

McGreevy furnished the basement with a television, stereo and comfy couches. "My wife doesn't spend too much time down here," he admits. "It's my man cave."

"I used to have an attic apartment where the weight of my records actually bowed the floor," he said.

The half bath is done in a rich shade of yellow.

McGreevy didn't want the basement to be dark and gloomy, so he put white rope lights along the stairs and added lights to one of the bookshelves to brighten the entry.

He left a portion of the basement unfinished and uses it for storage.

To further brighten the room, he painted it a blend of sky blue and desert orange.

McGreevy, a DJ and avid music collector, estimates that his collection includes 2,200 LPs, 300 45s, 1,000 cassettes and 11,000 CDs.

Brian McGreevy turned the unfinished basement in the Chamblee home he shares with his wife, Brinda Cockburn, into his personal retreat. "It had a lot of wall space. I needed a lot of linear feet for bookcases to hold my records."

Because of the delicate nature of his album collection, the basement had to be dry. "We waterproofed alongside the length of the house and put in a dehumidifier as well," he said. Last year, the couple also installed a new HVAC system.

"Here, I had enough room to raise the bookcases off the floor about 18 inches so I don't have to bend over too much. And I have another room just for record albums in crates," McGreevy said.
