Buckhead home gets an extreme makeover

Dan and Kerrie Bauer remodeled their 1947 Buckhead home to make it larger without dwarfing existing homes in the neighborhood.

The playroom has a hideaway under the eaves that the girls call their fort.

At the top of the stairs, a large playroom is lit by a wall of small windows above bead board wainscoting.

The powder room has textured walls.

The sun porch, a standard feature in many old Atlanta cottages, was rebuilt to the original scale but enclosed with windows. It now holds an armoire, bookshelves and overstuffed chairs.

Much of the square footage added to the 1950s home was in the back of the house off the kitchen, the laundry room and mud room. The Bauer's rented an apartment while the home was being remodeled.

The formal dining room holds a large table, perfect for family gatherings.

The front door opens into a square center entry hall with hardwood floors.

Kerrie Bauer stands in the sun room, which looks out over their property as well as neighboring Ardmore Park.

The expansion added a large master bath with a contemporary walk-in corner shower and an old-fashioned claw foot tub.

The new and much improved open kitchen has a center island, granite counters, antique white cabinets and an eating area.

Storage in the dining room is concealed by paneling.

Dan and Kerrie Bauer decided to remodel their one-story, 1947 cottage when their family outgrew it, so they could keep their prime Buckhead location. The new two-story design is compatible with other homes in the neighborhood. "We leveled it but built off the existing foundation, so we didn't have that 'McMansion' look," said Kerrie Bauer.
