About 12 percent of Americans experience migraines, and a new study published in the American Society for Microbiology suggests they could be caused by bacteria in the mouth.

Though previous studies have shown that increased nitric oxide in the bloodstream is associated with migraines, new research based on data from the American Gut Project sheds light on how foods with nitrates also may trigger migraines.
