Everyone knows that the ratings of tents are optimistic, right? That is, a two-person tent can obviously fit two people, but they better not be too big, and they’d better like each other. Of course, that’s the tradeoff: Everyone wants a lightweight tent that’s easy to carry, but that comes at the expense of size. The REI Half Dome 2 Plus tent gives you just a little bit more room than the traditional two-person tent — it’s 10 inches longer and 4 inches wider than the standard Half Dome. That may not sound like a lot of space, but the few extra inches give it a roomier feel.

The tent’s design allows both sides to be rolled up for the most airflow in the heat, yet they can be rolled down quickly if bad weather comes in fast. Four ceiling vents also add to the ventilation and prevent condensation build-up. You’ll also find more headroom — at least compared to other two-person tents. Set up is simple, and two doors and two vestibules make it easier for two people to maneuver around. At this price point, backpackers should be very happy — and dry — out on the trail.
