Church to mark
building's 100th year

Members of Suwanee First United Methodist Church will mark the 100th year of their sanctuary building with activities from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday. A fish fry will start at 4 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.

Loganville rector becomes
first bishop of Anglican diocese

The Rev. Dr. Foley Beach, rector of Holy Cross Anglican Church in Loganville, was recently ordained and consecrated as the first bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the South at the Church of the Apostles, 3835 Northside Parkway, Atlanta.

The Anglican Diocese of the South includes congregations in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Chief rabbi of England
to speak at Atlanta school

Chief Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, chief rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth (England), will present a talk, “Future Tense: How the Jews Invented Hope,” at 9 p.m. Saturday at Greenfield Hebrew Academy, 5200 Northland Drive, Atlanta.

Knighted by the Queen of England, Sacks also is a member of the House of Lords.

Conference to explore
hope, spirituality

Author Kathleen Norris will host a daylong conference, “The Search for Hope and Meaning: Spirituality for the Real World,” on Oct. 23. at the Cathedral of St. Philip, 2755 Peachtree Road N.W., Atlanta.

The cost is $50 and includes lunch.

Art for Good, a weekend of events to benefit students at St. Joseph of Arimathea Church and School in Haiti, will be held Oct. 22 through Oct. 24 at Christ Church Episcopal at 400 Holcomb Bridge Road in Norcross.

World's largest gathering
of religious scholars set

From “Rethinking Islamic Studies” to “Indigenous Religious Traditions” to “History of Christianity,” the American Academy of Religion brings the world’s largest gathering of religious scholars together Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.

The program is open to the public, but there is a registration fee.

An exhibition hall featuring spiritual and religious book vendors will be open during the days of the conference.

Founders Day activities

Gammon Theological Seminary, the United Methodist component of the Interdenominational Theological Center, is celebrating 127 years with Founders Day activities from Sunday, Oct. 17, through Wednesday, Oct. 20.

The theme, “Prophetic Voices in a Time of Change,” will highlight new trends and directions for ministry.

Parish in Cumming
to host prayer workshop

Contemplative Outreach of Atlanta will offer a seven-session program on centering prayer at St. Brendan’s Catholic Church in Cumming.

The program begins with a workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 30 and includes six sessions on consecutive Tuesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 2 through Dec. 14. The cost is $25 in advance or $35 at the door and includes all seven sessions.
