Looking for an investment tip for 2014? Consider investing in women who need help turning their lives around.

Each year Emerge Scholarships, a group that assists women by making it possible for them to further their education, sifts through a flurry of applications to select a new class of honorees. At the annual Emerge luncheon, supporters get to meet the new scholarship recipients and hear their inspiring stories of overcoming physical, emotional or financial challenges and their plans for forging ahead in a positive new direction.

“Through scholarships, Emerge addresses the need to support deserving women who have demonstrated a deep commitment to both reaching their educational goals and giving back to their communities,” the group’s mission statement reads. “We actively seek scholarship applicants who have come to understand that education is key to attaining their goals in life. We know that by educating a woman, we educate a family. Collectively those women and families make great positive impact on their communities. Emerge begins a ripple effect that grows immeasurably with each new scholarship award.”

This year's Emerge Scholarship luncheon is planned for 11:30 a.m. Feb. 25 at the Atlanta History Center. Tickets are $125 each and tables of 10 are $1,000. See emergescholarships.org or call 404-477-5808 for reservations and more information.

Dance event aids Alzheimer’s research

This year's "Dancing Stars of Atlanta" event is a few months away, but contestants are in rehearsal now. The fun group got together for a recent "cast party" hosted by Cynthia Widner Wall, senior vice president and director at PNC Wealth Management, at PNC's offices atop the Sovereign building in Buckhead. "Dancing Stars of Atlanta" Chair Lisa Fuller, who was a 2013 contestant and "People's Choice" category winner, announced this year's dancing roster will include Wall along with Millie Smith, Kimberly Nalley, City Councilman Kwanza Hall, Bill Harrison, Doug Weiss, Bronni Karatassos, Kane Katz, Kristy Robison and Zach Morris. Nancy Senner and Cory Thompson will serve as hosts for the evening's festivities, planned for May 3 at the Loews Atlanta Hotel. "Proceeds will advance research and promotion of brain health and enhance care and support for the over 200,000 Georgians living with Alzheimer's disease, their families and caregivers," Fuller said in a statement. "Alzheimer's is the sixth-leading cause of death in this country, with 5.4 million Americans suffering from this devastating illness."
