The Genealogy Society of Cobb County is offering its annual Genealogy 101 course for beginners Saturdays, Jan. 17 through March 14.

The classes will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and the first seven will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 189 Church St., Marietta.

Subjects for the first seven classes include: getting started, getting organized, census and vital records, newspapers and city directories, land and tax records, immigration and naturalization, African-American research, military and colonial records, cemeteries, and using libraries and other repositories.

There is no class March 7. The final class March 14 will meet in the Georgia Room at the Charles D. Switzer Public Library in Marietta to explore the published genealogy materials found there from all over the country.

Early registration deadline is Jan. 10. You can register online or by mail. Classes are free, but the cost is $36 per set of course materials before Jan. 10, or $46 afterward. Conferences and seminars

The new year also brings other genealogy educational opportunities. The National Genealogical Society will hold its annual conference in St. Charles, Mo., near St. Louis, May 13-16. Registration has begun at ngsgenealogy.org. They also have a new online class on Revolutionary War ancestors.

The Federation of Genealogical Societies will hold a joint conference with Rootstech Feb. 11-14 in Salt Lake City. Find more information at fgs.org.

The Georgia Genealogical Society will hold four meetings in 2015, with March 7 in Homerville being the first. Other meetings will be held in May, October and December, and there are free webinars on the third Wednesday of each month. Check gagensociety.org.

Archives worth a visit

Jackson County's Historic Archives is now open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, or by appointment. It's located in the Old Jackson County Courthouse, 85 Washington St., Jefferson. Call 706-387-7684 or go to tourjacksoncounty.com for more information.
