ELLIJAY

Apple Pickin’ Jubilee

September is here and with it comes apple season. If you’re looking for something a bit different from what you’ll find in the grocery stores, head north to Hillcrest Orchards to get the goods straight from the source. After you’ve had your pick of more than seven pommes varieties, from golden delicious to Arkansas Black, there will still be plenty to do during the orchard’s annual jubilee. Let the kids loose in the kiddie corn maze, watch the pig races or check out the moonshine museum. Don’t fill up on what you pick; save room for the apple-inspired tasty treats, including apple fritters, pies and caramel apples. Too busy to party this weekend? The harvest festivities run every weekend through the end of October.

9 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 9-10. $12. Hillcrest Orchards, 9696 Highway 52 E., Ellijay. 706-273-383, hillcrestorchards.net.

GAINESVILLE

Dragon Boat Festival

More than 40 years ago, long boats adorned with the heads of dragons began racing the waters of Hong Kong, and an international competition was born. Now, dragon boat races can be found all over the world, and Georgia is no exception. The annual Dragon Boat Festival in Gainesville is a chance to cheer on teams from across the U.S. as they glide across Lake Lanier. But it’s not just boats: The festival features cultural demonstrations, dancing and plenty of international cuisine. Start the day early to see Buddhist Monks bless the boats, then stick around for races throughout the day.

6:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 9. Free admission with $10 parking fee. Lake Lanier Olympic Venue, 3105 Clarks Bridge Road, Gainesville. 404-788-8818, dragonboatatlanta.com.
