Metro Atlanta cops and firefighters will take to the ice Sunday, Dec. 6, battling for hockey superiority — and fighting to help sick children.

It will be the sixth “Stick It To Cancer” charity hockey game, pitting the public servants against one other, and will take place in Alpharetta, at the Cooler Family Skate Center, 10800 Davis Drive.

Chairman Shane Dorfman, a 15-year Cobb County firefighter and chairman of the event, said he was overcome when he visited Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta dressed as Fire Dog during the 2011 holiday season. “It really hit me how difficult it must be for these kids, that are already battling so much. I knew immediately that I wanted to do something.”

Since then the event has grown. Officers from Paulding, Cobb and Gwinnett Counties, the cities of Marietta and Atlanta, and Homeland Security will compete in the 12 noon game. This year’s game will especially honor Bristol Haynes, the three-year-old daughter of Paulding County Firefighter Hunter Haynes. Bristol was recently diagnosed with leukemia.

The game will last about an hour and families will then have the opportunity for a free skate, also for an hour.

The contribution is $10. For more information go to thecoolerathletics.com.
