Alvin Ailey's 'Revelations' at Fox Theatre

The Alvin Ailey Amercian Dance Theater's "Revelations" runs through Feb. 13 at the Fox Theatre.

The Alvin Ailey Amercian Dance Theater performed a special show for students at the Fox Theatre on Friday, Feb. 11.

"Revelations" is a tribute to African-American cultural heritage. Alvin Ailey called it, "sometimes sorrowful, sometimes jubilant, but always hopeful."

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was founded in 1958 by dancer, choreographer and visionary Alvin Ailey, to bring African-American cultural expression and the American modern dance tradition to the world.

Alvin Ailey company's signature work is "Revelations," first choreographed in 1960.

"Revelations" is a suite of dances set to African-American religious music.

"Revelations" is in three parts that runs 38 minutes long, but was originally twice as long.

Artistic director, Judith Jamison, who has helped shape the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will retire later this year, and she'll be replaced by Robert Battle.

The Alvin Ailey Amercian Dance Theater's "Revelations" continues through Feb. 13 at the Fox Theatre.

"Revelations" is comprised of "Pilgrim of Sorrow", "Take Me To The Water" and "Move, Members, Move!"
