'XYZ: Alternative Voices in Game Design' at MODA

Guests play Skylanders Giants at the Museum of Design Atlanta, which is hosting the exhibit “XYZ: Alternate Voices in Game Design” through Sept. 2, 2013. The game merges physical toys with video game mechanics. It takes place in the imaginary world of Skylands, where player-characters harness elemental powers of Earth, Air, Fire, Magic, Water, Life, Tech and Undead to embark on adventures and defeat foes.

Exhibition curators and artists play Ninja Shadow Warrior at the Museum of Design Atlanta, which is hosting the exhibit “XYZ: Alternate Voices in Game Design” through Sept. 2, 2013. In this interaction and cooperation-encouraging game, players use ninja magic to hide within the silhouette of objects in a castle. By using their bodies to mimic the shape of objects, players are able to avoid detection.

With the help of a gallery host serving as a judge, two guests can play Flatlands. This exercise in aesthetics and debate draws from 165 game boards archived in the exhibit “XYZ: Alternate Voices in Game Design” at the Museum of Design Atlanta. The show continues through Sept. 2, 2013.

The early Atari arcade game Centipede (1981) is playable at the exhibit “XYZ: Alternate Voices in Game Design” at the Museum of Design Atlanta through Sept. 2, 2013.

The computer game Mainichi focuses on the mundane aspects of life, but through the eyes of an African-American transgender woman, presenting the player with the daily challenges she encounters. It’s part of the exhibit “XYZ: Alternate Voices in Game Design” at the Museum of Design Atlanta through Sept. 2, 2013.

The sculpture “Maturity Turn” by Nathalie Quagliotto is installed in the front window of the Museum of Design Atlanta, which is hosting the exhibit “XYZ: Alternate Voices in Game Design.” Based on the children's game tic-tac-toe, the sculpture has an added row and column of X and O blocks -- which reads XOXO, symbolizing love and sex. The piece thus becomes a game of mature intimacy rather than of infancy.
