Professor Michal Strahilevitz, who studies consumer behavior says, "Usies are a growing trend that I think have far more social value than selfies. It's magical capturing moments we share with other people."

Executive producer of Vocabulary.com, Ben Zimmer, says "usie" and "ussie" has been showing up in written material since at least April of 2013 and that, "there are countless variations on the theme, including 'twolfie,' 'threefie,' et cetera, if you want to specify the number of people photographed."

The "signature" of an usie is the outstretched arm of the photo-taker, who has to get the camera far enough away to get the group in the frame.
