Actor Tom Hanks surprised a group of Girl Scouts in downtown Los Altos a couple weeks ago when he bought cookies from him and then cajoled passersby who recognized him to buy cookies, as well, in exchange for photographs with him. (Source: losaltosonline.com)

Hanks bought four boxes and donated an extra $20 to the three Girl Scouts selling cookies on Saturday, Feb. 28.

One of the girls’ mothers said they did not recognize Hanks at first because he was wearing a baseball cap and glasses. But when Hanks started to walk away after buying the cookies, they caught up with him and asked.

“Are you Tom Hanks,” they asked, according to the report.

Once he said yes and other passersby began to recognize him and ask to take photos with him, he agreed but only on one condition, according to the girl’s mother.

“Only if you buy cookies from these young ladies,” he reportedly said.

Hanks was  in Los Altos to visit a typewriter shop . The shop's owner said Hanks bought two vintage Smith-Coronas.
