Now, we all know Stephen Colbert is a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkein's fantasy novels, including "The Lord of the Rings."

So you can imagine how incredibly excited he was to interview a very special character from "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies."

And just when we thought "The Colbert Report" couldn't get any cooler, Smaug the dragon makes a guest appearance in all his terrifying glory.

But Thursday night's interview wasn't the first time Colbert has gotten to live out his Middle-Earth dreams.

The host made a cameo in the first installment of "The Hobbit" series as a lake-town spy.

And he dressed up as some of the main characters from the film for not one, not two, but three collectors edition covers of Entertainment Weekly.

Not a bad way to kick off Colbert's last week as host of "The Colbert Report." The show will air its final episode Dec. 18.
