The teaser trailer release and name announcement happened during Friday's kickoff of the Star Wars Celebration weekend in Chicago. Director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilms President Kathleen Kennedy were joined by cast members to whet the appetite of fans in attendance, telling them, "This movie, it's about this new generation and what they've inherited, the light and the dark," according to Abrams, CNET reported.

The film takes place well after the events of “The Last Jedi,” but Abrams said they were able to include Carrie Fisher’s Leia as part of the “Episode IX” story.

"You don't recast that part and you don't have her disappear," Abrams said, as CNET reported. "What if we could write scenes around her.".

“Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” will be released Dec. 20.
