"Saturday Night Live" turned 40 in epic fashion, hosting a three-and-a-half-hour live special featuring many of the big-name stars who have appeared on the show over the past four decades.

The special included a mixture of live skits and musical performances, along with clips of classic segments.

The 40th anniversary celebration was heavily promoted on social media using the hashtag #SNL40.

'SNL' also released a free iOS app that includes over 5,000 clips and a special emoji keyboard.
