Fans of sardonic political diatribes, sharply drawn observations and frat-boy humor won’t be disappointed by the fall stand-up calendar this year. Here’s a look at some notable characters coming into town this fall.
Aisha Tyler. She's an actress (CBS's "The Ghost Whisperer), a voice-over queen (FX's "Archer"), a talk-show personality (CBS's "The Talk") and game-show host ("Whose Line Is It Anyway?"), but she is also a conversational stand-up comic. Sept. 27-28, Punchline Comedy Club, 404-252-5233, www.punchline.com
Russell Brand. He is best known as that jerkish British rock-star dude in various comedic movies ("Forgetting Sarah Marshall," "Get Him To The Greek") and Katy Perry's ex-husband. His current stand-up tour is called "The Messiah Complex" where he brings his clown jester-like persona and twisty use of the English language to the stage. Sept. 28, The Tabernacle, www.livenation.com
Dane Cook. He's had a reputation over the years of being arrogant and smug yet his fans, built from social media from its earliest MySpace days, have embraced him, helping him fill arenas. He has headlined shows at Philips Arena in past years but is downsizing this trip. Oct. 4, The Tabernacle, www.livenation.com
Wanda Sykes. On TV and film, Sykes has provided a welcome dose of outrage and outrageous personality. On stage, she sprinkles in bits about her life (she has twin daughters) and politics (she's a big Obama supporter). She recently hosted an all-female comedy show on OWN Network. Oct. 12, Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, www.cobbenergycentre.com.
Lewis Black. Black feeds off the absurdities of life, like that grouchy uncle yelling at the TV. Whatever is going on in the news is fodder for Black's dark sense of humor, seen on occasion when he riffs on "The Daily Show." Oct. 19, Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, www.cobbenergycentre.com.
