Romantic films guys will watch

Valentine's Day is a time for romance, either celebrating it or wishing you had it. But not all romantic movies appeal equally to men and women. (Some guys won't watch any romance, ever, but they're hopeless cases.) We polled AJC staffers of both genders to try to settle on a dozen great romantic movies that maybe, just maybe, men and women can watch and enjoy together. They're not in any particular order.

"Casablanca:" You must remember this. Bogey on the runway, proving his love by sending his lover away forever. Fog, trenchcoats, Nazis, the nobility of sacrifice. A classic.

"Annie Hall": Woody Allen rewrites his real-life affair with Diane Keaton and he still doesn't get her in the end. But the trip is worth it.

"When Harry Met Sally": It's actually an entire movie, not just the scene with Meg Ryan faking an O in a crowded deli.

"Out of Sight": Really a crime flick with a romance subplot. But when thief George Clooney and cop Jennifer Lopez get locked in a car trunk together, you want the scene to last forever. So do they.

"Jerry Maguire": Tom Cruise (before he went nuts) woos Renee Zellweger (before she started looking weird), with a subplot about Cuba Gooding Jr. (before he got annoying).

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind": Girl hires mad doctor to erase memories of her boyfriend from her mind. Boy hires mad doctor to do the same. Then it gets strange.

"High Fidelity": Arguably more about romance than a romance itself, this winning comedy stars John Cusack looking back at how mixtapes are easy but staying the course is hard.

"Love Jones": Has poetry ever looked more cool? Larenz Tate and Nia Long smolder in this funky, urban ode to verbal seduction.

"My Big Fat Greek Wedding": Women relate because the heroine has image issues; guys identify with being thrown into a difficult family.

"The Princess Bride": You get so caught up in all the sublime silliness, like Inigo Montoya searching for the man who killed his father, that you forget it's a romance. Until the end.

"Sixteen Candles": Molly Ringwald in a teen romantic triangle: She's crushing on a hot, popular boy, while a pathetic geek has a crush on her. John Hughes speaks to a generation.

"Pretty in Pink": "Sixteen Candles" was so popular, John Hughes just made the same movie again.

"Groundhog Day": Bill Murray as a romantic lead? Improbable, but so is this surprisingly thoughtful romance, in which he learns there are lots of wrong ways to woo the woman he loves, but only one way to do it right.
