Oakhurst Porchfest grew out of a whim.

When another Oakhurst festival was canceled this year due to construction, resident Scott Doyon suggested filling tthe gap by transplanting the Porchfest idea to this Decatur crossroads. Ithaca, N.Y. and Portland, Maine, already have similar festivals, which feature local musicians playing for free on porches and lawns throughout a single neighborhood.

Doyon expected to get 20 or 30 households interested, but with the help of social media the idea took off like gangbusters. Now 130 musical acts are on the bill. Among the planned highlights is an appearance by The Voice contestant Sydney Rhame and tropicalia chanteuse Adron. The Homegrown Brass Band, which established another Decatur tradition — the Mead Road Mardi Gras — is also slated to play.
