Young Jeezy performed at The Tabernacle in Atlanta Wednesday (Sept. 3). Here's a chance to know more about the Atlanta rapper who says he raps for the streets that gave him his start, not the mainstream media.

He has said he appreciates the nods history-making Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has given him in the national media, naming him as one of the eight influences for the eight gold medals he won in Beijing.

He has added his voice to records by such first names in mainstream music as Usher ("Love in This Club"), Mariah Carey ("Side Effects") and Kanye West ("Can't Tell Me Nothing").

His recently released "Young Jeezy's The Recession" is expected to go No. 1. So far, he's at No. 3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart with the song "Put On" (featuring Kanye West).

"Young Jeezy balances commercial/ pop aspirations with core hip-hop sounds on 'The Recession,' getting a lift from DJ Toomp, Drumma Boy, Midnight Black and longtime collaborator Shawty Redd on this sonically enjoyable follow-up to 2006's 'The Inspiration,' " said Hillary Crosley on Billboard.com.

And why did he name it "The Recession"? He told the AJC: "I don't know how this president defines it, or how he says we're not in it -- then again, I'm quite sure he wouldn't know. Anyway, I'm just meeting the people, the streets, where they are - in 'The Recession' - hard times....A time where you could look at a young man doing something great, like just getting out of college, and still not be surprised that he ain't looking so happy. Half of his family just lost their jobs....."

The Billboard review continued: "Previously criticized for strange rhymes and repeating lines, Jeezy delivers some great turns of phrase on songs like 'Wordplay,' where he answers claims of glorifying drug dealing with the couplet, 'They want wordplay and I got bird play'."
