ZZ Top rocks Chastain Park

ZZ Top rocked the Chastain Park Amphitheatre on Saturday as part of their 2008 summer tour with the Zac Brown Band.

Formed in 1969 in Houston, the group members are Billy Gibbons (pictured, guitars, lead vocals, harmonica), Dusty Hill (bass, vocals), and Frank Beard (drums, percussion).

ZZ Top has been together almost 40 years and is still composed of its original recording members, including bassist Dusty Hill (pictured). Until September 2006, the band also had the same manager/producer, Bill Ham.

ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 15, 2004. Summarizing their music, Cub Koda wrote, 'As genuine roots musicians, they have few peers; Gibbons is one of America's finest blues guitarists working in the hard rock idiom ... while Hill and Beard provide the ultimate rhythm section support.'

Drummer Frank Beard performs on 'Gimme All Your Lovin'.' Ironically, despite his surname, he is the only band member without a beard.

In 1984, the Gillette Company reportedly offered Gibbons (pictured) and Hill $10 million each to shave their trademark beards for a television commercial but they declined, stating, 'We're too ugly without 'em.'

The origin of the band's name reportedly is derived from the name of blues guitar master B. B. King. The band originally wanted to call themselves Z.Z. King but thought it seemed too similar to their hero. They decided that that 'King' was also at the 'top,' so they settled on ZZ Top.

The Zac Brown Band opened the show.
