The Bee Gees' musical career spanned four decades. The brothers - Maurice, Barry and Robin Gibb - enjoyed success early on as a pop act and later as prominent performers of the disco music era in the late 1970s.

Following Maurice's death in January 2003, Barry and Robin Gibb ended the group after 45 years of activity.

Robin Gibb enjoyed a mildly successful solo career. He released seven albums since 1970. His final project, "Titanic Requiem," was a classical composition in collaboration with his son, RJ, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's sinking. He had been touring as recently at 2009.

In 1994, Robin Gibb was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. His songs have been recorded by Barbra Streisand, 'N Sync, Destiny's Child, Celine Dion, among others. He is among the top five most successful songwriters in British chart history based on the number of weeks his compositions have spent on the charts.

In 2003, Robin Gibb and the Bee Gees received the World Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement at the World Award ceremony in Hamburg, Germany.

Sir Paul McCartney presented Robin Gibb in 2005 an honorary degree from Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall. McCartney awarded Gibb with a "rock and roll" diploma from his fame school. Sir Paul opened the institute, which was inspired by New York's School of Performing Arts, in 1996 in the grounds of his old school.

In 2004, Robin and Barry Gibb were decorated as Commanders of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Britain's Prince Charles.
