Amy Winehouse is the latest young musician to die too young and join the '27 Club.'

Talented yet troubled British retro-soul singer Amy Winehouse is the latest member to join what is known as the '27 Club.' Several famous musicians have all died at the young age of 27.

Kurt Cobain, the frontman for the influential 90's band Nirvana, killed himself with a shotgun in 1994. He struggled with heroin addiction during his musical career.

Janis Joplin died in 1970 of what is thought to be a heroin overdose. The powerful blues singer had struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for most of her adult life. Her death was especially difficult for rock fans of the era because she died just 16 days after Jimi Hendrix.

Jimi Hendrix, considered to be one of the greatest electric guitarists in rock history, died in 1970. The official cause of death was asphyxiation, caused by choking on vomit. It was reported by his girlfriend that he took several powerful sleeping pills with wine in the hours before he died.

Brian Jones was a founding member and the original leader of The Rolling Stones. He was found dead at the bottom of his swimming pool in 1969. The coroner's report stated the cause of death "by misadventure." He had struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for years.

Blues legend Robert Johnson is often considered to be the first member of the '27 Club.' He died in 1938. His cause of death is not certain, though legend it has it he was poisoned by a jealous husband after Johnson flirted with his wife.
