Jill Scott sells out the Fox Theatre

Three-time Grammy Award winner Jill Scott energized a sold out Fox Theatre crowd Friday night in the first of two sold out nights. Raheem DeVaughn opened the show.

Raheem DeVaughn's song "Woman" was featured as iTune's single of the week the week of January 27th, 2008 and received a nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for the 2008 Grammy Awards.

Jill Scott has established the Blues Babe Foundation (named after her grandmother), a program founded to help young minority students pay for university expenses. The Blues Babe targets students residing in Philadelphia, Camden, and the greater Delaware Valley. Scott donated $100,000 to help start the foundation.

Jill Scott was discovered by Amir "Questlove" Thompson of The Roots, who invited her to join the band in the studio, resulting in the co-composition "You Got Me," a Top 40 pop hit in 1999.

Scott has been nominated for a number of music awards. In 2007, she appeared in "Hounddog" (as Big Mama Thornton) and in Tyler Perry's movie, "Why Did I Get Married?."

Scott collaborated with Eric Benet, Will Smith, and Common in a Canadian production of the Broadway musical Rent.

Scott, performing "Gimme," is accompanied by an 11-piece band. They next play in Baltimore, Norfolk, Greensboro, Boston, Washington, Richmond, Detroit and Chicago.

Scott is an R&B, soul and jazz singer, songwriter, actress and poet.

Scott opens her set with "Let It Be" Friday night at the Fox. Born April 4, 1972, Scott grew up in North Philadelphia and began her performing career reading her own poetry.

Scott earned her first of twelve Grammy nominations in 2001 for Best New Artist and won her first Grammy in 2005 for the Best Urban/ Alternative Performance for "Cross My Mind."
