R.E.M., the rock hall of fame band from Athens, Ga., was a headliner at the 33rd Paleo Festival, in Nyon, Switzerland.

Michael Stipe was a founder of R.E.M., which started in Athens, Ga., in 1980 and was inducted last year into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

R.E.M. released "Accelerate" early this year. The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard charts and became the band's eighth album to top the British album charts.

At least 225,000 spectators were expected for the festival, which ran six days, from July 23 to 28,

R.E.M. continued its current rejuvenating run early in July with an exclusive live set available exclusively via iTunes. Nine songs were captured on tape at the band's appearance at the Apple Store on London's Regent Street back in March

Michael Stipe and his R.E.M. bandmates finished up their recent North American tour in Atlanta at Lakewood Amphitheatre in late June.

Also performing at the Paleo festival on Sunday was French-Israeli singer and songwriter Yael Naim.

Nigerian musician Seun Kuti, youngest son of legendary Afro-Beat pioneer Fela Kuti, performed at the festival on Thursday.

French singer Vanessa Paradis, right, and guitarist and songwriter Mathieu Chedid performed on the main stage on Saturday.

Earlier in the festival, rising British star Mika, left, with an unidentified background singer performed on the main stage.
