U2 fills the Georgia Dome

U2 and Muse played to more than 65,000 rock fans in a memorable concert at the Georgia Dome Tuesday night, October 6, 2009. A massive stage greeted fans before showtime.

The circular stage, which includes a seven-story video screen, is designed to give fans a 360-view of the concert. The stage allowed the general admission fans standing on the floor of the Dome to get really close to the band.

Fans were treated to 22 songs (including five encores). U2 kicked off the show with "Breathe" and "Get on Your Boots," from the new album "No Line on the Horizon."

U2 performed on a "The Claw" a huge 70-ton circular stage, which takes four days to build. The inspiration for the stage is said to come from Los Angeles Airport.

Bassist Adam Clayton remains focused during the spectacle.

Drummer Larry Mullen Jr is the founder of U2, which was initially known as the "Larry Mullen Band."

U2's challenge was to deliver an intimate concert to a group of 65,000, many of whom were crowded high in the rafters.

If you're wondering, lead singer Bono took off his sunglasses just after, "Beautiful Day," four songs into the show on Tuesday night.

The crowd's energy really took off with "Vertigo," featuring the Edge's hammered, chiming strings.

A message from Bishop Desmond Tutu aired before the first encore, thanking fans for supporting efforts to buy drugs to treat AIDS and malaria in Africa.

True to their nature, U2 sprinkled political messages on the large screens during their songs, including images of protests in Iran and jailed Burmese dissident Aung San Suu Kyi.

The concert's pace vacillated between intimate moments and explosive audience-participation anthems.

British rockers Muse opened the show. Muse played ferocious, progressive rock with a dark edge.

Matt Bellamy of Muse. The band is riding a wave of popularity with "Twilight" fans, due to the song "SuperMassive Black Hole," which was used in the first vampire movie.
