The documentary "Encounters at the End of the World" (opening today) involves German filmmaker Werner Herzog's trip to Antarctica (he promises no penguins). Here are other films that deal with either the North or South Pole.

1. "The Thing" (1982) —- Kurt Russell battles a grotesque, shape-shifting alien in Antarctica.

2. "Elf" (2003) —- Raised as an elf, Buddy (Will Ferrell) walks from the North Pole to New York City in search of his true identity.

3. "AVP: Alien vs. Predator" (2004) —- An island in the Antarctic Ocean is the ultimate battleground for two races of filmdom's premier aliens.

4. "Ice Station Zebra" (1968) —- Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine, Jim Brown and a weather station at the top of the world.

5. "March of the Penguins" (2005) —- Oscar-winning documentary following penguins in Antarctica.
