Monster Plantation, Six Flags Over Georgia's outdated ride, has completed its renovation and will reopen May 16 as Monster Mansion.

Six Flags Over Georgia is reopening the family-friendly classic Monster Plantation on Saturday with a new name and a new look. Tim High and Charles Love work on a sign at the renamed Monster Mansion.

Jack Townsend of Gary Goddard Entertainment works on one of the characters. Gary Goddard, the ex-Disney Imagineer whose company first designed and built Monster Plantation, said most of their handiwork held up over time -- it just needed some modernization.

Townsend paints one of the monster's eyeballs. Since the ride closed last fall, more than 300 people have worked on its remake.

Bob Baranik and Lance Gay, both of Gary Goddard Entertainment, work on the scenery. The 100 animatronic creatures got 230 yards of new fur, new costumes and smaller, lighter parts to keep them moving for years to come.

Kate McNeely and Ryan Sbaratta work on lighting a character in the Monster Band. The 25,000-square-foot mansion got new music recordings, backdrops, audio system and lights during the renovation.

Townsend works on some of the furry characters. "It's like a whole new mansion," Goddard says, "except we kept all the things we think people remember."
