Mariah Carey has been saying for years that she doesn't know Jennifer Lopez.
It all started in an early 2000s interview when Carey was asked what she thinks about Lopez. She responded with, "I don't know her."
At the time, Lopez was making strides in her career, releasing hits like "Love Don't Cost a Thing," starring alongside Matthew McConaughey in "The Wedding Planner" and launching J.Lo by Jennifer Lopez, a clothing and accessory company.
But despite their similar careers -- including being "American Idol" judges and now having a Las Vegas residency -- Carey maintained her claim that she doesn't know Lopez.
In a 2015 interview, Carey praised a fan who wore a T-shirt with the infamous "I don't know her" quote.
A few months later, a TMZ reporter asked the "Always Be My Baby" singer, "What do you think of people referencing, 'I don't know her,' all these years later?"
"I still don't know her," Carey replied.
Lopez shared a different side of the story with talk-show host Wendy Williams when she said she looked at other celebrities in Vegas before she started her own show.
"I didn't see Mariah because at the time, she wasn't playing," Lopez said.
"Who? No, I'm playing. That's what Mariah said about Jennifer one time," Williams joked.
"She does say that. She's forgetful, I guess," Lopez said.
And it seems Carey agrees. She subtly shaded J. Lo again Tuesday night on "Watch What Happens Live!"
"Do you know each other?" Andy Cohen asked.
"No," Carey said.
"She says you know her," Cohen said
"I'm very forgetful," Carey responded.
While many media outlets have called Carey's role in the banter between the two celebrities as "shading" Lopez, some people have said the two simply aren't friends and don't have a personal relationship.
