It may seem like a good idea to put your best face forward, so to speak, when diving into online dating. But a study shows that women who enhance their photos may not do well in the long run.
According to a University of Connecticut study, a group of men were shown two sets of photos -- a relatively normal picture, and one that researchers said had been "beautified" (better lighting, makeup and hair). The men in the study found the women in the "beautified" photo to be more attractive, but less trustworthy.
However, the men were still interested in dating the women in the "beautified" photo.
"The finding suggests that while even when men suspect that a woman may not look exactly like she does in her profile picture, they are willing to take the risk and pursue a date with her," said researcher Rory McGloin.
A research associate at Gettysburg College, Alex Jones, told NBC's Today that use of makeup may alter perception of women in some eyes. "Cosmetics use is one area where harsher judgments are given to women," said Jones, who was not involved in the study.
When it came to the reverse -- women looking at two photos of men -- the women in the University of Connecticut study found the "beautified" photo version both more attractive and more trustworthy.
