Sky Hike, Stone Mountain Park's newest attraction, is a huge ropes course with three levels: 12 feet, 24 feet and 40 feet. From the ground, it looks like a vast array of platforms, ladders, beams and ropes.

Five-year-old Andrew Elliott of Marietta needed a lot of encouragement from his mother Melissa to get through the course. They also were with Andrew's 8-year-old cousin Kaitlyn Rudziak.

Like other hikers, the Elliotts seemed to feel a combination of responses: fear, anxiety, confidence and pride. Melissa Elliott also felt something else: the need to have brought another adult to help with the two kids. "What was I thinking coming out here by myself?" she said.

River Ross, 8, of Milton focuses on the rope he is about to walk across. Park workers posted throughout the course offer everything from a little advice to a ride for kids who freeze and just can't do it. Luckily, Ross didn't need their help.

Andrew Weight, 7, shows no fear as he holds his own next to Gary Dyer of Pleasant Hill, Calif. When standing on a platform, hikers usually face two options: crossing something steady, like a 2x4 held firmly in place, or something less so.

Sky Hike is "the largest family public outdoor adventure course" in the United States, said Jeff Greenblatt, the park's director of operations.
