Contestants push fake bulls in Key West, Fla., during the annual Running of the Bulls. The festival ends Sunday on the island that author Ernest Heimngway called home in the 1930s. Monday marks the author's 109th birthday.

Hemingway meets with Cuban President Fidel Castro at the Hemingway Anglers Tournament on May 15, 1960, in Cuba. Castro won the individual honors with five fish weighing 268 pounds. Hemingway failed to land a single fish.

Hemingway is shown in a 1939 publicity photo for Sun Valley, Idaho. The author was one of a string of celebrities invited to the resort to promote business. He killed himself with a shotgun in Ketchum, Idaho, in 1961.
