SUWANEE

Rosa Parks’ birthday celebration

The Gwinnett County town marks the birthday of civil rights icon Rosa Parks with the help of author Jon Odell and activist Margaret Block. Odell, a Mississippi native, has written “Miss Hazel and the Rosa Parks League,” the story of two women, one white and one African-American, who find they have much in common in pre-civil rights movement Mississippi. Block is a poet and veteran of the 1960s civil rights efforts; she served as the secretary for Mississippi’s chapter of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Both will be on hand to discuss their work and to honor the legacy of Parks.
