MARIETTA

‘Rex’s Exes’ at the Stellar Cellar

It’s another slice of redneck comedy from the creators of “Red Velvet Cake War.” The Polk Street Players deliver its sequel, “Rex’s Exes,” written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten. Pete Borden directs this exercise in Southern absurdity. Lynda Palmer, Terri Callozzo and Abby Avery star as the Verdeen cousins, a trio scattered, smothered and covered in farcical dysfunction. When one of the cousins finds out her recently deceased hubby, Rex, is alive and kicking, his romantic past comes to light. That’s when the cousins realize they have more in common than just a family tree. Special dinner shows take place Aug. 17 and 24.

8 p.m. Aug. 16-17, 23-24, 29-31; 2:30 p.m. Aug. 25. $12.50-$20. Stellar Cellar at St. James’ Episcopal Church, 161 Church St., Marietta. 770-218-9669, www.polkstreetplayers.org.

LITHONIA

‘42’ at Stonecrest Library

Both movie and baseball lovers have two chances to step up to the plate and see this film. Originally released in theaters last April, “42” is the latest biopic about Georgia native Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to play Major League Baseball in the modern era. Chadwick Boseman plays the slugger and Harrison Ford steps out of his stereotypical mold as Branch Rickey, the executive director of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The audience will gather in the library’s auditorium, where the movie will be shown on the big screen. Although the event is geared toward all ages, keep in mind it’s rated PG-13 and includes strong racial themes and language.

2 p.m. Aug. 16-17. Free. Stonecrest Library, 3123 Klondike Road, Lithonia. 770-482-3828, www.dekalblibrary.org/branches/stonecrest.html.

SUWANEE

Mad Margritt at Wild Wing Cafe

The hair metal 1980s never ends for the Atlanta-based Mad Margritt. Grunge? What grunge? The group, which released its latest disc, “Show No Mercy,” last month, continues partying like it’s 1989. Having recently shared the stage with Saliva and Candlebox in Florida, Mad Margritt brings its blazing fretwork, stratospheric vocals and power ballads back home for a string of area shows, including this one. They’ll likely play house rockers such as “I Can’t Get Enough” and “Down in Flames” from the new album. Fans will be tempted to put down their chicken wings and beers and flick their lighters when the band plays “Only in My Dreams.” Wait a minute; isn’t there an app for that?

10 p.m. Aug. 16. Free. Wild Wing Cafe, 3265 Lawrenceville Suwanee Road, Suwanee. 770-945-9090, www.wildwingcafe.com/our-locations/suwanee-ga.php.
