Jack Nicholson, Cesar Romero, Heath Ledger are the iconic portrayals of Batman’s arch nemesis Joker, but now a new actor is smearing on the greasepaint.
Joaquin Phoenix has taken on the moniker of the Joker, and a first look at his take on the Crown Prince of Crime, was released Wednesday.
This time Phoenix is Arthur Fleck, a man trying to work as a clown, who becomes the punching bag for the criminals of Gotham. Eventually he finds Joker's signature laugh as he sits in a darkened comedy club, Entertainment Weekly reported.
It is a stand-alone in the DC Universe and not connected to “Wonder Woman,” “Shazam!” and “Aquaman,” according to Entertainment Weekly.
“Joker” will be released on Oct. 4.
In addition to Phoenix, it stars Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron and Shea Wigham.
