The pioneering Joan Rivers is still continuing to blaze trails at 79. A well-received documentary about her life, "Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work," premiered to good reviews in 2010.

In addition to her stand-up, Wanda Sykes has appeared on "The New Adventures of Old Christine" and "Curb Your Enthusiasm." And she wowed as the featured speaker at the 2009 White House Correspondents' Dinner.

Amy Schumer turned a fourth-place finish on "Last Comic Standing" into a career, touring with her stand-up and acting as a guest on Comedy Central roasts (including, most recently, at one for Charlie Sheen).

Whitney Cummings was responsible for not one, but two hit shows this past season: She created and stars in "Whitney" and created and produces "Two Broke Girls." The former is critically bashed, but hey, it's a hit.

Atlanta resident Margaret Cho has most recently brought the laughs playing Kim Jong Il on "30 Rock."

In addition to her stand-up, you've probably also seen Kristen Schaal as a commentator on "The Daily Show" and as annoying fan Mel on "Flight of the Conchords."

Two for the price of one: Comedian Tig Notaro (left) has appeared on comedian Sarah Silverman's (right) show, "The Sarah Silverman Project." Notaro was featured in Paste Magazine's "Best of What's Next" issue, and Silverman's book "Bedwetter" is a New York Times bestseller.

Maria Bamford is best known for her comedy (featured in the documentary "The Comedians of Comedy"), but she was also that crazy running Christmas shopper in those Target ads from a couple of years back.

Aisha Tyler rocks the mic with her stand-up and has reached a whole new audience with her voice work as Lana on the animated show "Archer."
