Edith Head, multi-Oscar-winning costume designer, honored by Google

Edith Head, an American costume designer who won more Academy Awards than any other woman, is being remembered with a Google Doodle on what would be her 116th birthday.

Edith Claire Posener was born in 1897 in San Bernardino, California. In 1924 she was hired as a costume sketch artist at Paramount Pictures.

Head created costumes for dozens of Hollywood stars from Ginger Rogers to Elizabeth Taylor but may be most popularly known for her work on Alfred Hitchcock films such as "Vertigo" and "The Birds".

Her IMDB profile lists 438 credits, 28 Oscar nominations and 8 Oscar wins.

She won Oscars for her work on "The Sting" (1973), "The Facts of Life" (1960), "Sabrina" (1954), "Roman Holiday" (1953) , "A Place in the Sun" (1951), "All About Eve" (1950), "Samson and Delilah" (1949) and "The Heiress" (1949).

Head married film set designer Wiard Ihnen in 1940 and the marriage lasted until his death from cancer in 1979. Head died Oct. 24, 1981 from an incurable bone marrow disease.
