The storefront at 1992 Hosea Williams Drive in Kirkwood has gone through yet another change. Last year, Aces Bar & Grill became Jak’s All Inn, trading an adults-only dive vibe for a more family-friendly concept. The Pullman, which takes its name from Kirkwood’s historic railroad yards, continues on that track as a kids and community focused “gastropub.”
The look: Located next door to Dulce Vegan Bakery and Cafe, The Pullman glows with light and bright colors. An expansive L-shaped bar wraps around the back of the open, rectangular dining area. In addition to booths, cafe tables and banquet-style seating, there’s a lounge area in the front corner furnished with comfy chairs and a game chest.
The scene: Early one Saturday evening, neighborhood families were out in full force. Two long tables were packed with parents and toddlers and topped with rocking baby carriers. Across the room, couples burrowed into a row of booths, while the bar was all but deserted.
The menu: Food offerings feature gussied-up takes on pub grub. Sriracha wings ($8) and flash-fried chicken livers ($6) top the starters. Sandwiches include fried green tomato ($8) and smoked sausage ($7). The house Oh George burger is topped with peppered bacon, Manchego cheese and grilled onions. Find pan-seared trout ($14) and barbecue short ribs ($13) among the entrees.
The drinks: At the bar, at least half of the 12 taps are dedicated to local craft beers from the likes of Red Hare, Sweetwater, Terrapin and Wild Heaven. Signature cocktails include the Bobtail (vanilla vodka, orange soda) and the Casey Jones (Southern Comfort, Crown Royal, peach schnapps, spiced rum, cranberry juice, pineapple juice, orange juice).
The extras: Look for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 10 a.m., with shrimp and grits ($10), crab cake Benedict ($11) and steak and eggs ($12).
