The new Stax Burger Bar in Roswell is the creation of Carlos and Luciano Ramirez and their chef brother, Luis. They call their concept a retro restaurant with a modern twist. And Luis Ramirez brings a fine dining background that includes stints at Van Gogh’s, Vinny’s on Windward and Aspens Signature Steaks.

The look: Located in a shopping center west of Ga. 400 on Holcomb Bridge Road, the entrance to the storefront space features a courtyard patio with high top tables. Inside, the narrow dining room includes bistro-style seating and a small bar with a few stools.

The scene: One weeknight, nearly every table on the patio and in the dining room was filled, while a couple sipped wine at the bar. Working to the strains of '50s rock 'n' roll, attentive servers kept the burgers and sides coming from the kitchen at a speed that rivaled fast food.

The menu: Named for the double stack of 3-ounce patties, burgers are served on brioche buns. Among the five different beef combos, there's the Stax classic ($6.50) with American cheese, lettuce, tomato and red onions. Eight other specialty burgers are made from the likes of pork and chorizo, turkey, lamb, chicken, shrimp, salmon and veggies. A cheffy veal saltimbocca burger ($7.75) is layered with fresh mozzarella, prosciutto, tomato and sage mayo. Sides are a la carte.

The drinks: Bargain-priced beverages include a small number of draft beers ($2.50-$3.50), such as Fat Tire and Blue Moon, and bottled beers, such as Sweetwater 420 ($3.05). Red or white sangria ($6) is served frozen or on the rocks. There are also wines by the glass ($2.50-$6.98) or bottle ($9-$25).

The extras: Several of the sides, such as onion rings with Gorgonzola dipping sauce and sauteed Brussels sprouts with shallots and pancetta, also can serve as small plates or starters. The kids combo ($6.50) includes a burger, drink and fries. Dark chocolate or vanilla shakes ($6.50) are blended with Haagen-Dazs ice cream, and floats ($5.50) are made with Stewart's sodas.
