Firkin & Gryphon in Dunwoody opened in December, the third metro Atlanta location of the expanding Canada-based Firkin group of British-style neighborhood pubs.
Each pub has a different name — it’s Firkin & Crown in Cumming — and a unique look. But all feature a full-service restaurant setting, serving lunch, dinner and brunch, along with daily specials.
The look: Situated in a freestanding brick building at Perimeter Village Shopping Center on Ashford Dunwoody Road, F&G mixes traditional pub furnishings with tuned-in sports bar touches. The hefty rectangular bar is surrounded by HDTVs and several tables have mini TV screens. Darts and pool add to the convivial vibe.
The scene: During a recent weekday visit, most of the barstools were conspicuously empty. But the dining areas were buzzing with bunches of Dunwoody office workers out for lunch. And one large group filled a long banquet table.
The menu: The kitchen turns out classic pub grub, starting with Scotch eggs ($5.99) and Irish nachos ($6.99), and featuring the likes of an English cheddar burger ($7.99), beer-battered fish and chips ($10.99) and Guinness steak and mushroom pie baked in puff pastry ($9.99). Other entrees range from a pulled pork platter ($9.99) to chicken fried steak ($10.99) and a 10-ounce grilled rib-eye ($20.99).
The drinks: The drink menu has a full complement of wine, spirits and specialty cocktails. And the beer list includes more than 30 draft and 35 bottle offerings, with a surprising number of American and local craft ales, such as Bells Two Hearted, Terrapin Hopsecutioner and Wild Heaven Invocation.
The extras: A brisket sandwich, braised chicken thighs, wild mushroom pizza and tropical fruit cobbler have been among the recent daily specials. Look for brunch specials 11 a.m. -- 3 p.m. Saturdays -- Sundays, and karaoke Wednesday nights beginning at 9:30.
