Longtime devotees of Alpine Bakery first may be a bit confused and then quite pleased by the transformation that’s taken place since its recent move to a sprawling storefront in the Silo shopping center in Alpharetta’s Crabapple community.

The popular New York-style bake shop and pizza parlor now includes a swanky, full-service Italian restaurant, serving lunch and dinner.

“People are really surprised when they walk in the door,” a smiling hostess commented one afternoon as she ushered a party through the packed dining room.

The look: Viewed from the parking lot, the brick facade and tall windows covered with long white curtains give no clue to what's inside. But the space has a sparkly, energetic sort of elegance that conjures an upscale hotel lobby, while high-backed booths make for cozy seating nooks.

The scene: The bustling lunch scene was a mix of women delighting in mammoth slices of intricately decorated layer cakes, businessmen ordering entrees from the dinner menu and regulars there for the pizza, calzones and lunch specials.

The menu: The thin-crust pizza with gooey Grande cheese and the football-size stromboli are still menu stars. But look for hearty soups, such as pasta fagioli, and huge sandwiches, such as Italian beef, at lunch. Dinner entrees include every imaginable pasta favorite, plus seafood and steak.

The drinks: There's a full wine and beer list, including an array of Red Brick ales on draft, served in heavy contemporary glassware. At the counter in the small side cafe, a barista turns out caffe latte, cappuccino and other frothy coffee treats.

The extras: True to its roots, the Alpine Bakery shop features a glistening row of glass cases filled with an eye-popping array of sweet stuff, from creamy pastries and fancy cookies, to whole cakes, cheesecakes and pies.
