Cangelosi’s Pizzeria is much more than just a pizzeria.
Like so many neighborhood restaurant owners these days, Tom Cangelosi is taking on the tough economy by offering his customers multiple choices. Appetizers, salads, pasta dinners and even hot dogs and New York deli-style sandwiches are on the Powder Springs parlor’s lengthy menu, along with the expected pizza, calzones and oven-baked subs.
Local flavor
Cangelosi’s family is from Brooklyn by way of Sicily and he grew up on Long Island. Cangelosi said his homestyle cooking is based on the kind of hearty, old-school Italian food he enjoyed in New York. But he takes pride in using ingredients from metro Atlanta purveyors — fresh pasta from Costa’s Pasta in Kennesaw; sausages, hot dogs and deli meats from Patak in Austell; bread from the Grateful Bread Co. in Smyrna.
That local flavor carries over to the friendly feel of Cangelosi’s, where rows of kids’ drawings mix with photos of Coney Island, and families drop by for pizza after football games on Fridays and lunch after church on Sundays.
Pizza creations
Though Cangelosi may not rank with Atlanta’s top artisan pizza makers, his fresh-dough thin-crust and Sicilian creations are fine versions of what you’d find at pizza parlors all over New York.
The airy thin-crust pie has bready, crispy edges and a soft, chewy center, covered with well-spiced homemade tomato sauce and a blend of Wisconsin cheese. Order it by the single slice or in six-slice medium or eight-slice large sizes with a variety of toppings, including pesto and eggplant.
Specialty pizzas include the Four Little Pigs, with Italian sausage, Canadian bacon, smoked bacon and ham; the Mediterranean Veggie, with roasted vegetables, artichoke hearts and sun-dried tomatoes; the Hawaiian, with pineapple and ham; and Buffalo-style chicken.
Pasta dinners
Pasta dinners come with garlic squares and a side salad. Look for a whopping 25 different dishes, including perennially popular spaghetti and meatballs and baked ziti. Cangelosi’s hefty lasagna is layered with sausage, meatballs, ricotta, mozzarella and marinara sauce. Pasta Cangelosi has nearly a dozen ingredients, starting with grilled chicken, peppers and onions, sauteed with olive oil, garlic and white wine.
Deli favorites
Hot corned beef or pastrami on marble rye or a grilled Reuben are among the deli favorites. But look for over a dozen more sandwiches and subs, including a Cuban and Chicago-style Italian beef.
