The Heber Springs, Ark., sheriff confirmed to the Associated Press that the 37-year-old died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. TMZ is reporting that she shot her dog as well.
McCready, who landed a No. 1 hit in 1996 with "Guys Do it All the Time" and had her last major radio presence in 2002, had been in rehab on Feb. 7. She transferred to home care a few days later without her sons, Zander and Zayne, according to radio industry site AllAccess.com. The children are reportedly in foster care.
The singer’s documented troubles began years ago, and in January, her boyfriend and record producer David Wilson -- Zayne’s father -- died. A probe into his death is still ongoing.
McCready,who was born in Fort Myers, Fla., but moved to Nashville at 18, had attempted suicide in 2005 and 2008 and was hospitalized in 2010 after an apparent drug overdose.
McCready had a high-profile dating history, including an affair with longtime Boston Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens that began when she was 15. She was also engaged to actor Dean Cain in 1997.
Her most recent album, “I’m Still Here,” was released in 2010.
