The Sunday evening 9/11 concert also featured performances by mezzo soprano Denyce Graves, country star Alan Jackson and R&B legend Patti LaBelle.

Closing a day of 9/11 remembrances at a "Concert for Hope" in Washington, President Obama reminded Americans of their resilience as he paid tribute to the losses suffered a decade ago while recalling the country's enduring values.

President Obama said the attacks that killed almost 3,000 people didn't alter the nation's character because "America does not give in to fear." The president's short speech was his only public address on Sept. 11.

Country star Alan Jackson sang "Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning." The concert was sponsored by the Washington National Cathedral. It was to have been held at the cathedral, but after the building suffered damage from the recent earthquake and the collapse of a crane on the grounds, the event was moved late last week to the Kennedy Center.

R&B legend Patti LaBelle brought the generally somber crowd to its feet

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama applaud the performers.

Supporting LaBelle were the evening's other entertainment, the Marine Chamber Orchestra and the Washington National Cathedral Choir.

Mezzo soprano Denyce Graves closed out the evening with a performance of "Amazing Grace."
